ABOUT

The Manitoba Lab for AI Law and Ethics is an interdisciplinary research hub at the Faculty of Law at University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. The Lab advances research and community engagement on the legal, ethical, and policy challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on its impacts within Manitoba while contributing to broader national and global debates on responsible innovation.

WHAT WE DO?

Providing a Platform

Platform fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across faculties, as well as engagement between academia, industry, and public stakeholders on questions of AI law, policy, and ethics.

Advancing Academic Research

Research on AI and emerging technologies, with an emphasis on human-centered, rights-respecting approaches to innovation and AI governance.

Catalyzing Dialogue

Bringing together scholars, policymakers, industry leaders, and civil society and facilitating informed discussions and collaborative solutions on AI policy and regulatory challenges.

Mapping & Engaging

Outreach to public institutions, government, civil society organizations, and communities to better understand the challenges and opportunities arising from digital transformation in Manitoba, with particular attention to Indigenous communities and inclusive technological development.

The Manitoba Lab for AI, Law & Ethics brings together experts from across disciplines and sectors to advance responsible artificial intelligence research and innovation. Through collaboration with academic departments, industry partners, and community organizations, we foster knowledge exchange, develop practical solutions, and address the legal, ethical, and societal challenges of emerging technologies.

Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science collaborates with the Manitoba Lab for AI, Law & Ethics to advance interdisciplinary research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, technology, and the law. Through expertise in AI, machine learning, and computing, the department helps foster innovation that supports responsible and ethical AI development.

Idea Start

IDEA START is the University of Manitoba’s innovation and entrepreneurship initiative, empowering students, researchers, and faculty to transform ideas into real-world impact. Through mentorship, experiential learning, and interdisciplinary collaboration, IDEA START helps foster innovation that addresses complex societal challenges.

Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy brings expertise in ethics and philosophical inquiry to support interdisciplinary research on the societal impact of artificial intelligence. Its collaboration with the Lab helps promote responsible innovation, critical analysis, and ethical AI governance.
